You’ll need to understand the concepts of link popularity and link reputation in order to build a natural looking link portfolio for your website.

Each inbound link comes from a page, which itself has inbound links. Google offer more weight to inbound links from the important pages than the less important ones.
Another website linking to your web page counts as a vote for your website by search engines. Search engines are capable of distinguishing the importance of various links based on their priorities.

Few years ago, search engines ranked web pages depending on the number of links to them from all other websites. It was assumed that good pages attracted more links and more links meant higher ranking on the search engines.

However, the scenarios are changing and search engines do not simply rely on the pure link popularity anymore. They evaluate links based on their importance. The algorithms used by search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing etc. to assess the importance of links keep changing periodically. So, you’ll have 3 tasks to accomplish for a successful link building strategy:

1. Get the maximum possible number of incoming links from the important pages, always try to have the links from the High PR pages as much as possible

2. Build relevance between your anchor text and target keywords phrases used in search engines

3. Try to have the link from the pages that are related to your website business

Note: Gaining links from other sites unusually quickly can result in your page to be de-indexed by Google. You should make the process of links growth appear as natural as possible.

You may have 1000 free directories in your list but you do not want to blast them all at once. For a better indexing, search engines like Google prefer steady stream of links to your site. Especially, if the site is new, search engines do not expect a lot of back links to appear at once.

Although, link building is a laborious and time-consuming activity, every website owner should be running an ongoing link building campaign to keep the ranks maintained. A good practice would be to make the efforts in building the equivalent of 30 PR3 links to your site each month, preferably made up of higher PageRank links, i.e. 6 links with PR4 or PR 5 and 5 links with PR3.

It will not help you to go crazily about building hundreds of incoming links in the shortest time duration; the progress should be always as natural as possible.
